"Survival of the Fittest"
A Legion battle cruiser is ambushed by Harkilon fighters while in orbit around Wedifact IV, a nature preserve. Two Legion squads (Vector and Nomad) escape to the planet's surface.
After Vector is wiped out, Nomad discovers that pirates have set up a secret, illegal and lucrative mining operation. Nomad is inhibited by weapons restrictions in the preserve but the pirates are under no such restrictions.
Under armed and outnumbered, the Legionnaires must hold out until help can arrive, but both external and internal pressures threaten their survival. The illegal mine is secretly being run by a Harkilon Imperial in disguise. The Harks are looking for rare fissionable material to make weapons with which to attack the Union.

The pirate leader in orbit (another Hark in disguise) sends some men down to retrieve a data orb which Nomad Squad is unwittingly guarding. The orb contains information about the Hark’s plans to gather fissionable materials. The Hark leader is determined that it not fall into Legion/Union hands.
Violating his orders, Capt. Sarigar finally gives Grimrod the okay to use an unauthorized cannon in order to save the unit. Montroc learns that not all of his troops share his integrity and sense of duty. There is tension between Sarigar and Montroc over how to handle Badj’s apparent desertion.
First appearance of Zeerod, Vesper.

"Last Gamble"
On the planet Kol, a peace treaty has finally been negotiated, ending a long and bloody civil war. Some Legion squads are in place to protect the arriving Union ambassador against terrorists, but even they aren't prepared for the ambassador's kidnapping by...pacifists!
The pacifists are upset that the treaty obligates all factions, including the pacifists, to serve in the planet’s new military force. Torie, Meico, Torqa Dun, and Skathe must rescue the ambassador - despite stiff resistance from the local government. Meanwhile, Sarigar goes on military trial for his recent orders violation.
“Last Chance”, a back up story, retells this issue from a different point of view, that of Gribitz, an extremely unlucky gambler. Gribitz tried unsuccessfully to make sure the Legion’s mission was a failure in order to win a wager he’d placed.

"The Killing Zone"
A military coup on Bokunh Island has resulted in the executive mansion being taken over. The Legion is assigned to take it back without destroying it. In the fighting, Montroc is wounded and left for dead as Legionnaire Skob takes off his rank-bars, hoping that he'll be spared if the enemy thinks he's an officer.
After Montroc is reported "presumed dead", Zeerod disobeys Sarigar's orders and goes out looking for Montroc. Meanwhile, the feverish Montroc has visions of his past and possible future (and death). Montroc’s love interest, Karina, is introduced during the hallucinations.
Skob, captured by the militants, escapes and goes to look for his commander. Zeerod finds Skob, and they team up to find Montroc.
In “Conscience”, the back up story, we learn why Zeerod refused to leave a teammate behind. Zeerod, when he served in the Union regulars, once left a comrade behind to endure a horrible fate. He vowed never to do so again.

"Chain of Command"
Captain Sarigar is preoccupied with the fissionable material that was retrieved from Wedifact IV. This prevents him from noticing problems among the troops - particularly Skob, whom the other Legionnaires are angry with because he left Montroc behind. Corporal Skilene attempts to warn Sarigar, to no avail.
The Captain has his own problems, as his superior, Major Nordrad, refuses to listen to Sarigar’s wild suspicions out of fear of damaging his own career.
Meanwhile, in a brawl among the troops, Skob is badly wounded. Sarigar goes to Nordrad's office to get the data he needs, but is turned back.
Elsewhere, the Harkilons gather their forces and prepare to mount their attack.
A weary Meico returns to the barracks to announce that Skob has died from his head injury.
Instead of a backup story, this issue had personnel files on Mescad, Vesper, E-Thar, Takatak, Skilene, the Bospor, and Zeerod.

"Operation Nerve Center"
While one Legionnaire suffers from the beginnings of a narcotic addiction, another risks his career on a hunch. Durge, bothered by his slow speed, takes narcotic stimulants in order to move faster. Captain Sarigar has succeeded in getting his troops sent to patrol the sector where the Harkilons will most likely strike with their fissionable ore-weapon.
The Harks want to take out the Union’s communications center with a huge blast, then launch coordinated attacks on the Union. The Hark rationale is that the birthplace of their species is now part of Union space and they want to reclaim it.
Eventually, the Harkilon ship collides with the Legion ship, and a pitched man-to-man battle breaks out. The Hark bomb is defused, thanks to Grimrod's unique interrogation methods. Torqa Dun convinces Durge that he doesn't need to be fast, and thus doesn't need the drugs he's been taking.
The untitled backup story provides the details of Major Nordrad's attempt of revenge on Sarigar, for ruining his career.

"Planetfall"
A Legion transport is carrying magistrate Kog-Nar2 and his wife following the investigation of recent Harkilon activity. Takatak's celebration of his promotion to sergeant is curtailed as the ship is attacked. After a space battle and a boarding attempt - resulting in the death of Takatak - the Legionnaires are forced to evacuate ship, and take shuttles to a nearby unknown planet.
The Harkilon survivors have also made it to the planet. The Hark imperial leader was killed and the most dominant Hark drone begins to quickly evolve into a new imperial/leader.
Unknown to both groups, a sinister symbiotic life-form on the planet intends to make meals out of them all. A strange fungus is eating all non-organic matter (including weapons, shuttle, etc.), imposing a time limit on top of the other problems.
Grimrod recognizes Kog Nar2 as a judge who knows of Grimrod’s murder conviction on Jugger’s home world of Thrax. If that info gets out Jugger will be expelled from the Legion. Montroc is attracted to Kog Nar’s wife, Lora-Nar2.

Jugger Grimrod goes after the foolishly-wandering Kog-Nar2, determined to keep the magistrate from revealing Jugger's old murder conviction. However, they are captured and tortured by the Harkilons.
Grimrod and Kog Nar have to work together to escape and survive. Unknown to Grimrod, the Harks plant a tracking device on him in order to follow him back to Nomad’s base camp.
Meanwhile, Montroc continues to develop an interest in Lora-Nar2, Kog-Nar2's wife. The Legionnaires learn of the deadly hypnotic plant/animal symbiotes that inhabit this planet.
Nearby, the Harkilons, having tracked Jugger back to the base, prepare to attack.

"Rude Awakening"
The Harkilons sneak toward the Legion base, in the process badly wounding the Bospor as he slacks off in his guard duty.
Grimrod and Mescad happen to find him, and get into a firefight with the Harkilons. They try to bring the wounded Bospor with them but can't. As Grimrod and Mescad flee back to base, the Bospor stumbles along alone, and gets wasted by laser fire.
Meico's mental powers go berserk for a short time. The battle rages on, as the Harkilons pour all their forces into their attempt to overwhelm the legionnaires. Mescad keeps busy despite his feelings of guilt over Takatak and the Bospor's deaths. Mescad rescues Grimrod, averting his guilt for the moment.
Torqa Dun manages to get the downed shuttle’s shields up, and a standoff begins. Sarigar goes out to try and work a truce with the Harks, which ticks off Grimrod.

"Desperate Measures"
A truce is formed between the Harks and Nomad. A small squad of Legionnaires and Harkilons get the transmitter from the Harkilon ship, to facilitate escape. The strange creatures that live on the planet attack this party, killing most of them. Meico is badly injured. Mescad stays behind with him while the others continue on.
Meanwhile, at the main Legion base, more of the creatures are preparing to attack, having hypnotized the Legionnaires and Harks. Though wounded, Meico uses his mental powers to snap his comrades out of the trance from afar. Nomad and the Harks engage the charging foes.
Thanks to Meico, the combined Legion-Harkilon force turns back the aliens. Mescad operates on Meico, guided by the medic via ESP, amputating Meico’s poisoned arm. All survivors return to the camp, and proceed with the repairs, but many of the Legionnaires wonder how long the peace will last.
Elsewhere, the now almost fully-evolved Harkilon imperial leader plots and schemes, thinking of the best way to kill Sarigar and his men.
“Disaster Signal," the back up story, shows Skilene deciding if he should hang around waiting for a rescue beacon from the long-lost Nomad shuttle.

"Deadly Deception"
Answering the distress signal, a Legion shuttle arrives on the planet - but there isn't room for both the Legionnaires and the Harkilons. Sarigar chooses his own men first, and the Harkilons retreat in anger.
The planet's carnivorous aliens attack the legionnaires while the Harks attack from a different flank. Despite all this, the Legionnaires hold out and are able to launch the shuttle.
Unknown to Nomad, the Harkilon leader assumed the form of a Union scientist and stowed away on the shuttle. His true mission: to retrieve the evidence of the Hark’s gathering of fissionable material and to kill the magistrate and his wife.
After doing this, the Hark assumes Sarigar's form, but thanks to Grimrod's keen nose, the real Sarigar is alerted. A short and bloody fight ensues, and Sarigar wins.

"Hunt for the Hunter"
Follow-up to the backup story from issue #2. Cordar, the rogue who ran off with Sarigar's sister, Sarivil, many cycles ago, has become a feared bounty hunter. Unfortunately, he also abuses Sarivil. In a moment of desperation, she sends a call for help.
Meanwhile, a training exercise is taking place, and various squad members are having problems (Zeerod is feeling too old and slow, Mescad is sick of the military life, Durge seems strangely immune to pain and fatigue.)
When Sarigar finds out about his sister, he takes Torqa Dun and Grimrod and goes to Space Colony Kelvan. Though he can't see his sister (Legion policy prevents that) he is able to deploy his men to track down Cordar.
Eventually, they do, and Sarigar beats him to a pulp before turning him over to the authorities. Sarivil, however, doesn't appreciate her brother’s help and returns to Cordar.

"The Official Death of Jugger Grimrod"
Jugger's violent past catches up with him, as the Guild of Assassins sends three killers to eliminate him. Through various methods, Jugger is driven half-insane, and he begins suspecting his teammates.
Sarigar, realizing that this is erratic behavior even for Jugger, helps Jugger draw the assassins out into the open, where they are more easily killed. Sarigar then files a report stating Jugger Grimrod is dead in order to stop future attempts on Jugger’s life. Jugger is (temporarily) issued another identity by Sarigar.

"A Deadly Truth"
A Rashomon-like playback issue wherein the four Legionnaires who were present on a mission-gone-bad - Tamara, Durge, Torie Montroc, Torqa Dun - are questioned and cross-examined by Captain Sarigar.
Three innocent civilian women were gunned down, and there's no doubt that one of the four Nomad members did it. But which one, and why? It turns out that Durge was again taking narcotics to increase his speed. The drugs caused hallucinations in Durge, leading to the murder of the women.

Tamara and Meico manage to find Dun and convince him that it's both impossible and a bad idea.
Durge gets his sentence: reprogramming in the Mindrobber (essentially a lobotomy). Dun can only watch as his old friend's mind is erased permanently, in preparation for his serving out the rest of his days in Nomad as an unthinking automaton.

"Dead or Alive"
After an exhaustive, half-day battle on an outer moon, Nomad's members are wrung-out and in bad spirits. This holds especially true for Skilene, who takes a bunch of supplies and deserts.
Two teams are sent out after him, though the penalty if he's caught is death. The team of Montroc and Meico have a different outlook on this situation than the Grimrod/Torqa Dun team.
After Torie finds and spares Skilene, Grimrod tracks Skilene down and shoots him in cold blood. Later, for their outstanding leadership in this campaign, Sarigar and Torie are both promoted.

Sarigar talks with General Gokk, trying to convince him to re-instate Nomad. In the infirmary, Zeerod finally wakes up, only to realize that he's missing two legs and an arm,. He also has new transplanted eyes. Sarigar and Meico are going to see what they can do about the lmissing limbs.
Sarigar's new Force Nomad will be composed of Nomad survivors and Legionnaires with criminal records. Montroc and Sarigar mull over the personnel files of potential new squad members - they've been given the bottom of the barrel to choose from.

Essentially a solo Grimrod story, telling of his adventures on Ragallun XI after being left for dead on an enemy-infested world. Grimrod is called before a board of inquiry. Grimrod’s self-serving vocal account of his exploits as told to the board is counterpointed to the "real" version seen visually.
Grimrod witnesses an Orestan agent making a deal to betray the Union to the Harks. For outstanding bravery and resourcefulness, Jugger is, much to his chagrin, promoted to Captain and given his own command.

Grimrod's first, last, and only mission as leader of his very own command. While on security escort detail for a fleet of civilian cargo ships, Grimrod and his troops must deal with a Harkilon "Trojan Horse" sort of weapon - an alien monster that is accidentally released prematurely.
Jugger's entire force (with the exception of himself and Balveebes) becomes lunch for the xeno, but Grimrod finally destroys it. Upon returning, Grimrod is so disgusted with being an officer that he punches General Gokk in the face, insuring a swift demotion, a stint in prison and no further command assignments. Grimrod would rather spend time up in tiny cell than serve as an officer.

"The Bite"
On Arrios IX, a Legion training planet, Montroc leads Nomad in a training exercise. Unknown to anyone, somebody's taken command of the gun turrets - somebody who wants to see Nomad dead. Montroc and Tamara ignore orders and storm the gun-towers, but end up killing the assassin before they can find out who sent him.
Montroc and Sarigar figure out that the attempt is likely tied to Jugger's encounter with the Orestan arms dealer on Ragallun, suggesting a high-reaching conspiracy.
Meanwhile, on Line Star III, the Legion's lock-up facility, Grimrod serves his sixty days for decking General Gokk. He must defend himself against assassins within the prison.
Elsewhere, on the planet Aret, Torie Montroc and Tamara go to visit Guy Montroc, Torie's father. They are followed by yet more assassins. The killers invade the house and shoot Guy Montroc.

Montroc, Tamara and Nakhira venture to a subspace relay terminal. While Montroc and Tamara fight off guards, Nakhira gains the necessary information. They have evidence now of Orestan involvement with the Harkilons, and take it to Sarigar and General Gokk.

"Scalpel"
On a remote moon, General Gokk meets secretly with high-ranking members of the Siderium, to gain their support in his move against the Orestans.
On Kreedes, the main world of the Orestes system, Nakhira and Tamara penetrate the world's massive databanks - the largest known to exist anywhere - and insert a virus to destroy them, barely escaping with their lives. In the Braalian system, a Legion fleet rushes to intercept a Harkilon merchant fleet.
Despite the massive firepower covering their ground insertion, one shuttle is damaged and forced to land on Brall VII. The shuttle contains Grimrod, Meico, the Iks, Tonk, Arrick and some others.
Due to bad intelligence and more Harkilon forces than expected, Sarigar is forced to withdraw the fleet, effectively abandoning his troops on the planet. The Nomads on the ground are taken captive.

"Biology Lesson"
Sarigar explains to Montroc that the captured Nomad troops will have to be left to their fate, unless something in this delicate political situation changes.
On Braal VII, the Harkilons and Orestans march the captured Legionnaires (including Grimrod, Meico, the Iks, Tonk, and Arrick) to their prison compound. Within their cell, the troops meet a native - the last native - of this world. He tells them about the Orestans' and Harkilons' hostile takeover of the planet. At night, Grimrod and Hodey make a break for the fence, against the advice of both the Braalian and their teammates. Hodey is eaten by the Gar, a gigantic beast used by the Orestans as a guard.
Undeterred, Grimrod has the Iks dig a tunnel under the fence, as Meico studies the pair of Gar that are rotated each day to guard the fence. Realizing that the Gar are a mated pair, the prisoners soon have the fence breached and the Gar more interested in each other than eating escapees. They break out, hijack a shuttle, and leave the planet; the Orestan warden ends up as a Gar snack.

Jugger Grimrod tries to teach a group of raw recruits some of his tactics, but one of them, Pike, wants to play rough, so Jugger puts him down - hard. Meanwhile, Zeerod prances about on his new cybernetic legs, which he's been training with long and hard so that he might rejoin Nomad.
Elsewhere, Sarigar and Montroc play a game similar to chess, and the Major notes that Montroc has changed - he's now willing to accept losses as part of an overall victory.
In the infirmary, Pike (the soldier Jugger beat) makes plans with Skeezil to avenge his humiliation. The Iks, eavesdropping, go to warn Jugger, but he's busy trying to score with a Legionnaire-ette from Devil Squad.
In the lounge, Zeerod chats with Tamara, Montroc, and Meico about the current state of Nomad. Tamara collapses. Meanwhile, as Grimrod pursues his new friend, they come under fire from Pike and Skeezil. The Iks swoop in and save the day, blasting Pike out of the sky.
In the infirmary, Tamara informs the others that she's pregnant. Nearby, the half-dead Pike is brought in; the only thing keeping him alive is his hatred for Grimrod.

During the assault, the World Guard stays back behind the Legion, prompting more verbal abuse from Grimrod. When in sight of the enemy position, the World Guard charge the enemy with only a large tuning fork while Nomad gives cover fire.
Striking the enemy’s fortifications with the tuning fork, the World Guard all sing a powerful note that beaks the enemy’s fortifications apart. No need for weapons, as Grimrod points out, when every native on the planet is a sonic cannon.
